Where does one start, I thought to myself, as I sat down to write this… so I thought I’d look for some famous quotes about the famed, flame hair!
Mark Twain (or rather Samuel Langhorne Clemens) once said…
“While the rest of the species is descended from apes, redheads are descended from cats.”
And, do you know what, I kind of get where he’s coming from…
A redhead is a not just a hair colour, they are a species in their own right. That’s not meant to sound conceited in any way but, like it or not (redheads that is), it’s definitely a hair colour that divides opinion – you either love cats or you don’t – and red hair is a bit like that… it’s the follicle equivalent of marmite!
1950s American TV actress and complete mega-star at the time, Lucille Ball, said…
“Once in his life, every man is entitled to fall madly in love with a gorgeous red head.”
I’m not sure if that’s true, but it also hints that, maybe, the enigma of redhead can make some men act like moths to the proverbial flame – an excellent analogy too!
These days, I think that we’ve come full circle again on the perception of the redhead. In the heyday of cinema, many of the leading ladies and Sirens of the time were, invariably, a flame haired, searing, sultry redhead – think Bette Davis, Rita Hayworth, Katherine Hepburn, Deborah Kerr – so the ‘stock’, at that time, was good.
Recently, the ‘flare hair’ seems to have made a phoenix-like return to popularity and back in the circles of the Hollywood leading lady – this time think Nicole Kidman, Alyson Hannigan, Julieanne Moore.
Don’t get me wrong; growing up with the dreaded ‘curse’ of the ginger hair was tough at times. Yes, of course, my Mum loves it and every old lady cooed over it… sadly, kids are cruel and red hair (and freckles) often attract the attention that nobody wants, as a vulnerable, impressionable and sensitive girl. However, what I have learnt since then is that I LOVE MY HAIR COLOUR, as much as I love chocolate! Yes, you read that right!
So now, as a VERY proud redhead, with a website dedicated to the very thing and its perpetual fascination, here I am penning my first ever Simply Redheads blog!
I’ll finish with a quote from Cort Cass, author of The Redhead Handbook;
“Being a redhead is more than just a hair colour – it’s a way of life.”
So whether you are a redhead, ginger, auburn or strawberry blonde, live it, love it!
And now I’ve got my first blog under my belt, I might start my first novel… “Fifty Shades of Ginger”…..
